Twenty years ago, a power surge might cost you a clock radio. Today your furnace, fridge, washer, garage door, thermostat, and half your light switches have circuit boards in them — and the power strip behind your TV protects exactly one shelf of it. A whole-house surge protective device (SPD) mounts at the electrical panel and clamps surges before they reach any branch circuit. It's one of the cheapest insurance policies in the trade.
What actually causes surges in Chicago
Lightning gets the headlines, but most surges are smaller and constant: grid switching, transformer events, a neighbor's AC compressor cycling, and — the one people never suspect — your own large appliances kicking on and off. Those small repeated hits age electronics quietly. The dramatic kill-everything surge is rare; the slow death by a thousand spikes is routine.
The code angle
Recent editions of the National Electrical Code require a surge protective device whenever a home's service equipment is replaced. Which code year your town enforces varies across Chicagoland — but the direction is set: surge protection at the panel is becoming standard equipment, the way GFCIs and smoke detectors did. When we do panel and service upgrades, an SPD is part of the conversation every time.
The smartest time to add one
During panel work. Standalone, an SPD install is a small job — typically a few hundred dollars, most of it the visit itself. Added while the panel is already open for an upgrade or replacement, the labor mostly disappears into work we're doing anyway. That's why we bring it up mid-quote instead of as an upsell afterward: the panel we upgraded for Brew Coffee Lab in Park Ridge was sized for espresso machines and refrigeration — exactly the kind of compressor-heavy equipment whose own cycling generates the surges an SPD eats. What it protects — and what it doesn't
- Covered: everything on a branch circuit — appliances, HVAC boards, EV chargers, smart devices, LED fixtures (whose drivers are notoriously surge-sensitive).
- Layer it: a panel SPD plus point-of-use strips on computers/AV is the belt-and-suspenders setup. The panel unit takes the big hit; the strip cleans up what's left.
- Not magic: a direct lightning strike overwhelms anything. SPDs are about the 99% of surges that aren't that.
