Most straightforward Level 2 home installs in the Chicago area land between $800 and $2,000 — and the single biggest variable is the distance and path from your electrical panel to where the car parks. If your panel also needs an upgrade to handle the load, that's a separate line (see our panel cost guide) — and you want to know that before you buy a charger, not after.
What's actually involved
- Load calculation first. A Level 2 charger is one of the largest loads in a modern home. We calculate whether your existing service can carry it — honestly. Many can; some can't.
- A dedicated 240V circuit, sized to the charger (typically 40–60A), run from panel to parking spot.
- Hardwired unit or NEMA 14-50 outlet — we install Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Emporia, and every major brand.
- Permit and inspection where required — handled by us, included in the quote.
What moves the price up or down
- Distance & routing: panel in the basement, car in a detached garage across the yard = trenching or overhead — the expensive case. Panel on the garage wall = the cheap case.
- Condo & multifamily buildings: shared panels and building rules add steps. We've done building-wide electrical across Chicago — from a Lincoln Park full-building rehab to downtown build-outs — so this doesn't scare us; it just needs a site visit.
- Panel headroom: if a load calc says your service is full, options are a service upgrade or a load-management device — we'll price both and tell you which we'd pick.
The honest recommendation
Get the load calc and firm install quote before buying hardware. It's a photo of your panel and a photo of where you park, sent to info@mclelectric.org — or call (872) 378-0533. Full details on our EV charger installation page. Serving Chicago, the North Shore and northern suburbs.
